Mort Shuman, a reknowned American composer, saw Brel perform in Paris in mid 60s and fell in love with his music. He met Brel and when he came back to the US, Shuman collaborated with friend and poet Eric Blau to translate many of the songs to English with Brel's permission. They mounted a show called Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris in NYC's Greenwich village on Bleeker Street at The Village Gate and the show ran for four years!The building to this day has a Brel landmark sign.
