During the weekend of 3rd of September the citizens of Prague and many tourists will be welcomed by a Belgian Flower Carpet on Starometske Namesti. The multitude of colours in the carpet symbolizes the harmony that exists between the member states of the European Union. During the second half of this year, Belgium holds the Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
Every second year a Flower Carpet decorates the main square in Brussels. This year it was on display from August 13 to 15.
For the creation of the carpet only Begonia flowers are used because they are available in a great selection of colours. Not the whole flower, but only the petals from the best varieties are selected. The begonia flower made its first appearance in Belgium in 1860 in the Gent region. Nowadays Belgium produces every year 60 million begonias, 80 percent of which are for export.
From concept to realization the creation of a flower carpet takes about 1 year.
Under the supervision of the Belgian designer Marc Schautteet, thirty volunteers have worked 5 hours to arrange the right colours according the blueprint. Floral carpets require in excess of 300 flowers per square meter. In the case of the Prague carpet 150.000 were handpicked in Belgium the day before and lied down individually.
Three themes have been used for the Prague carpet. The crest of the city of Prague, as seen on the astronomical clock, the logo of the EU presidency and motifs in art nouveau style.
Enjoy the view of this unique carpet as it will only stay for 3 days on Staroměstské náměstí!
